Amplitude-Modulated Bursting: A Novel Class of Bursting Rhythms.
We report on the discovery of a novel class of bursting rhythms, called amplitude-modulated bursting (AMB), in a model for intracellular calcium dynamics. We find that these rhythms are robust and exist on open parameter sets. We develop a new mathematical framework with broad applicability to detect, classify, and rigorously analyze AMB. Here we illustrate this framework in the context of AMB ...
متن کاملAutapse Modulated Bursting
In this paper we present a model of autapses which are synapses connecting axons and dendrites of the same neuron and feeding back axonal action potentials to the own dendritic tree. The timely physiological selfinhibitory function they may serve, indicated by the spike-timing dependent plasticity rule, provides a potential negative feedback mechanism to control the dynamical properties of neur...
متن کاملA phantom bursting mechanism for episodic bursting.
We describe a novel dynamic mechanism for episodic or compound bursting oscillations, in which bursts of electrical impulses are clustered together into episodes, separated by long silent phases. We demonstrate the mechanism for episodic bursting using a minimal mathematical model for "phantom bursting." Depending on the location in parameter space, this model can produce fast, medium, or slow ...
متن کاملMultiple mechanisms of bursting in a conditional bursting neuron.
The anterior burster (AB) neuron in the stomatogastric ganglion of the spiny lobster, Panulirus interruptus, is a conditional burster in the pyloric motor circuit. Bath application of the monoamines dopamine, serotonin, and octopamine induces rhythmic bursting pacemaker potentials in a silent, synaptically isolated AB cell. However, each amine produces a unique and characteristic burst shape, r...
متن کاملSimple models of bursting and non-bursting P-type electroreceptors
Weakly electric "sh use phase and amplitude modulations of their electric organ discharge to communicate and to capture prey (electrolocation). P-type electroreceptors, also known as probability coders, on their skin can detect extremely weak signals. We analyse baseline "ring characteristics of these receptors from experimental data, and present mathematical models for the "ring activity of bo...
